From Battlefields to Biodiversity: Restoring the Natural Tapestry of Cedar Creek & Belle Grove

 

While widely celebrated for its rich human history, spanning from early American Indian occupation through the monumental 1864 Civil War battle, Cedar Creek & Belle Grove National Historical Park also safeguards a deeply interconnected biological legacy rooted in the Shenandoah Valley (Middletown & Us, n.d.; Foundation Document Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park Virginia, 2018). Spanning 3,708 acres of diverse habitats, including the Shenandoah River, limestone uplands, and unique cave and karst systems, the park’s ecological landscape has long been shaped by human agricultural use and development (Foundation Document Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park Virginia, 2018; Condition of Selected Natural Resources at Cedar Creek & Belle Grove National Historical Park: 2024 Assessment (U.S. National Park Service), 2024). Today, a dedicated partnership between the National Park Service and community organizations is actively working to reverse historic habitat fragmentation and restore native biodiversity (Middletown & Us, n.d.; Condition of Selected Natural Resources, 2024). A prime example of this ongoing stewardship is the Morning Attack Trail field, a 47-acre former agricultural site that underwent major restoration in 2022; by planting native grasses and wildflowers, conservationists are successfully rebuilding crucial habitats for grassland birds and native pollinators like bees and butterflies (Condition of Selected Natural Resources at Cedar Creek & Belle Grove National Historical Park: 2024 Assessment (U.S. National Park Service), 2024). Though modern pressures like non-native invasive species, regional noise, and light pollution pose ongoing challenges to the park's woodlands and night skies, continuous monitoring and long-term restoration initiatives ensure that this historic landscape remains a thriving refuge for native flora and fauna (Condition of Selected Natural Resources at Cedar Creek & Belle Grove National Historical Park: 2024 Assessment (U.S. National Park Service), 2024).

Woodland Turtle Sighting

  Spotted a Woodland Turtle! Today as I was walking through my yard to my garden I spotted a Woodland turtle! I often find these turtles in my quiet neighborhood crossing the road or near our creek. It was a surprise to find them near my pear tree enjoying the sun and munching on some grass. I may have spooked them by taking some pictures but needless to say they were a good sport and “smiled” for the camera. Documenting and Training

This summer, and possibly beyond, I'll be tracking and recording sightings of fireflies and woodland box turtles. I plan to spend two to three nights a week outside spotting fireflies. For the woodland box turtles, I often see them crossing the road, which is when I stop to move them, or find them in my yard.
